AI design tools have gotten very good at making brands that look finished. Beautiful mockups, confident color palettes, a sixty-page PDF of guidelines. We see more of them every month, and we genuinely love the enthusiasm they arrive with. But an AI has never held a piece of paper. It has never mixed ink, felt a press bite into cotton stock, or paid for a copper die. So when an AI-generated brand reaches our studio, we’re often the first place where the idea meets the physical world.
That’s not a complaint. Translating ideas into ink and paper is the whole job, and we’ve been doing it since 2006. But most AI brand guidelines need the same three fixes before they can be letterpress printed, so we thought we’d save you a step and name them.
The type is too thin to survive the press
Letterpress works by pressing a plate into soft, thick paper with real force. Lines thinner than 0.25 points break down under that pressure. They crumble, fill in, or vanish entirely. AI tools love hairline serifs and delicate rules because they render perfectly on a screen, where nothing has to withstand a press. On paper, they don’t survive. The fix is usually simple: slightly heavier type, or a typeface built for impression. Our guide to designing for letterpress covers the details.
There are no vector files, because the AI never made any
A letterpress plate is made from paths, not pixels. AI image generators produce raster images: beautiful, high-resolution, and unusable for plate-making. Most AI brand packages contain no vector art at all, just renderings that look like logos. Before anything can be printed, the artwork has to be rebuilt as true vectors. We can do that rebuilding, or you can ask a designer for it, but it has to happen. Our file preparation guide explains what press-ready art looks like.

Everything is customized, and nothing is prioritized
AI brand guidelines tend to specify every embellishment at once: foil here, embossing there, a die-cut edge, twelve brand colors, a pattern on the reverse. On screen, all of that is free. On press, each foil color requires its own copper die and its own press run, every process is another pass through a machine, and every pass has a cost. The brands that feel the most luxurious in your hands are almost never the ones with the most stuff on them. They’re the ones where somebody chose the two moments that mattered and executed them perfectly. Choosing those two moments is the most valuable thing we do together.
None of this means your AI-generated brand can’t be printed. It usually can, and often it should be. The ideas are real even when the specifications aren’t. What it needs is a translation from what looks good in a rendering to what can exist on paper, and that translation is a conversation we have every week. Bring us the PDF, tell us what you love about it, and we’ll tell you honestly what it takes to make it real.
